Death
Afterwards, going even deeper into hostile territory, the 79th Infantry Division crossed the Sarthe River into Le Mans in which they were met with little resistance. After crossing the Seine, the Germans launched heavy counterattacks from August 22-27th. Field Marshal von Kluge had the element of surprise on his side, but it was not enough to break the Allied lines. Otis was killed on August 27th during the extensive and brutal German counterattacks. There is no doubt that Otis, having been a seasoned soldier from the initial invasion and close-quarters combat, fought well. According to his records, Otis suffered an injury to his right humerus. The U.S. Army promptly contacted his family members to inform them about his tragic death.
